Caving Shorts

On a few recent trips I've been too hot in my coveralls and poly pro under garments. I'm looking to see what the folks on here that cave in shorts use. Caving specific shorts or normal heavy duty shorts or something else, let me know.

You might want to state the typical temperature inside your caves. That makes a big difference.

High to mid 50's. For reference I'm the type of guy that wears shorts until it snows, And even then sometimes I still wear shorts.

It ain't a fashion show.

I don't care how they look, I just want something I won't have to replace after a few trips.

I don't think it matters. Nothing is going to wear out in just a few trips. I'm not trying to beat on you, but I'm honestly confused by the modern need to crowdsource even the most mundane decisions.

I think for a lot of people, myself included, is they want to cut down on the trial and error process. Just buy the right thing the first time.

Long ago, I bought a pair of cordura shorts from Cecile, but I don't think they would be available anymore.

You could try finding the most sturdy, non-cotton shorts you can find and sewing and/or gluing some cordura patches on the butt which is the primary place they're liable to wear out. Plus they'd be a little warmer/and slightly more padded if you sit on a rock or some mud.

What about some of the production caving shorts like dirty dave's or crawldaddies, just not worth it?

I have no experience with either of those. You could try calling IMO and see if anyone has purchased them and given them any feedback. They look decent. I think I'd pick Dirty Dave's, but I don't really know.

I might just go to IMO, I'd prefer to talk to them in person and see the products, I also need to get my mom some gear so I could kill two birds with one stone.

Check out caveskinz. They make bomber shorts. IMO is my go to store for all my caving needs. I'd check with them too.

I've used a pair of the tougher REI pants for warm-area (Arizona) caving shorts. Zipped off the lower leg and went caving. Zipped the legs back on for the hike in/out. The comment about the wear area in the butt is a good one. These are not the Nylon pants but ones made of Cordura. Not sure if REI still sells them.

I highly recommend the Dirty Daves Caving shorts, aka "Dork Shorts" as we call them around here...

I've been wearing a pair for many years now and they are still going strong. You can buy them from Nina at Inner Mountain Outfitters.

There is no need to spend a whole lot of $ on caving shorts. You can get some super cheep Walmart shorts that are 100% Premium High-Grade Polyester. Also, very important that you get some without loops!
