I've recently gone back to caving after a 10 year absence and used the same pair of boots I used on my last caving trip.

I would suggest that you try to get the boots wet and then they will loosen up and not be as stiff. I have had my caving boots stiffen up before and then I wore them for a wet cave trip where there was a lot of wading through water and they became unstiff.
