Underground Radio

Postby ohiocaver » Dec 3, 2014 8:30 pm

Does anyone have experience with the Ferra underground radio? I understand cavers and miners in Europe have toyed with it. It is supposed to work up to 1200 meters underground in data mode (less in voice mode), and up to 3km in a shaft or tunnel. It's 1810 to 2000 kHz. Would be very handy for cave rescue or spread-out expedition work. Weighs just under 5 lbs (2kg).

Not sure. This website http://www.xferra.com/products/ indicates that it actually goes from 300khz to 3,000khz though and the default is in the range you mentioned.

But yikes, 2000 euros is a lot of cash. Guess that's why so many ham operators do it themselves.

Hmm. This looks good, but as others have said... very expensive.

Does anyone know of something like this, but cheaper? Or am I stuck trying to build my own?
