At OTR a caver said he had used a thermal imaging attachment to find a sinkhole that he was able to dig open. I don't want to quote details because I would get something wrong. You can read about the gadget at http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/08/ ... or-vision/

Nice...Would love to have one...but spending $349 in addition to buying a Lightning-equipped iPhone 5 or 5S is a heck of a lot of money. Hopefully this technology will get cheaper in the future.

I have a FLIR E4 IR camera that I use. I did the "hack" and upgraded it with better options and resolution. I bought it last winter for $1000 new. It works very well for cave detection. I wonder what the actual cost for an iphone and the FLIR One would be compared to the FLIR E4?

Nice! Been wanting to see how well it works. Am really hoping that you'll shoot a cave entrance when you get a chance. Would like to see whether it is visible.

OK, I don't live near any caves, so I went to a nearby culvert as a pseudo cave:

Warm, summer day:
Culvert, at cloudy sunset, facing away from sun. Asphalt path on right.

Culvert at cloudy sunset. Wettish marshy area in cool blue. Rocks in foreground are warm.

This is an example of a low entrance to a large cave system in early morning mid July. Notice the FLIR E4 has temperature readings. Does this new FLIR attachment have those capabilities? Without the temperature readings, the FLIR can trick you into thinking you have a cold or hot spot, especially if the outside and "exiting" temperatures are close.

Hmmm. Better images than I imagined that thing would produce. Been wanting to aim one at a variety of hot descenders... but all I got is a dummyphone

Any chance of you posting some hot rack (or other) images one of these days?
