Petzl Elios Sliding Ventilation

Postby rlboyce » Dec 16, 2013 9:11 pm

Is it true that not all Petzl Elios helmets have sliding ventilation?

If not all Elios have sliding ventilation, which is best for caving? Is there much of a difference?

I found a good deal online for an Elios, but it looks like it does not have sliding ventilation. I don't want to buy it if you guys think sliding ventilation is better.

I have an elios that does not have the sliding ventilation, just the open holes. I've pretty much stopped using it because it's so hot. I switched back to a ecrin, much more comfortable now.

Thanks for your thoughts. I've heard the complaint about Elios helmets being hot, more than once. I was hoping the ones without the slots would hold less heat in. I've heard that Black Diamond Half Domes are even hotter.

My current helmet (an Elderid Ultralight) seems kind of cold when I wear it, so maybe a warmer helmet would be a good thing for me?

I use an Elios w/o sliding vents, and rarely have any issues with it being too hot. But each person will have a different idea of what "too hot" means. If it is ever too cold, which it normally is during early-morning winter ridgewalks, I just wear a helmet liner under it.

The newer Elios have the sliders. I believe they added that about 2 years ago.

No sliding vents on my Elios (around 3 years old). But I don't use it for caving, and having a slightly warmer helmet in sub-freezing temperatures is nice.

I decided to buy the Elios. Thanks for helping me with my decision!

A little late here, but.... I wear a BD Half Dome when under and have not had any issue with it being to hot. In fact, I generally have to wear a helmet line with it. Then again, I'm bald, so that may effect the temp up there.....
