Ever hear of the Jetbeam PA40?

Postby JR-Orion » May 31, 2012 10:26 am

Yes, this is an $80 hand held flashlight. And I get the impression that it was designed for SWAT team members more than cavers.

But it's tough, somewhat waterproof (to IPX-8), and I like the specs. Uses 4 AAs-

468 lumens / 2.5 hours
220 lumes / 6 hours
50 lumens / 27 hours
"Uh-oh. I think we're going to be here for a while" mode- 2 lumens / 150 hours

I like having a handheld light along in certain situations. Or you could always mount it on the side of your helmet.

468 lumens, LOL. To my eye, 225 out of my Fenix HP10 was crazy bright.

Jasen,

I'd rather pay another $20 and get this:

But I use 18650 rechargeables...

The Jetbeam has one advantage although it is not as bright. It runs off AAs. If your primary headlamp runs off AAs it is nice to have your other hand helds run off them also, especially if you already own the LaCrosse charger and eneloop AAs. If you already have the 18650s and charger for another light ,the other light is more attractive. I am gald you posted this because I am looking for a bright AA hand held.

I have read a lot about keeping all your lights on the same size cells. But where your primary may run packaged 18650's (Sten). What diff would it be having all your back-ups run on AA, 123 or some other?

It is just nice to have ALL your lights run off one battery. Especially if that battery is a common one that can be found anywhere. Especially if you have already purchased a charger for that battery. 18650s are nice and have output you cannot get with AAs , my problem is you cannot find them without having to mail order. When I can go to my local Kroger or Wallmart or drug store or convenience store and get 18650s then I will consider them. You can power 400 lumen lights with AAs , that is PLEANTY of light for me. If I need more light than that I think my money may be better spent at the eye doctor than on a brighter light.
