10 essential outdoor gadgets - a few might interest cavers

Some others- like the $400 jacket- might make you laugh.

But mainly, I hadn't heard of merino wool before, and wondered if it could be handy under some cave coveralls? Supposedly it breathes well when you're hot and wicks away sweat.

"Heck, it doesn’t even pick up body odor."
?

There's a new Petzl headlamp in there, and a hydration back pack that sprays water into your mouth. For those times when you are too tired to actually take in a sip or two.

Wired should stick to what they know. This article is basically useless fluff, but I guess if you're really having trouble figuring out ways to spend all your money this would be a good place to start.

Anyway, I will extol the virtues of merino wool. It does indeed resist body odors, making it great for multi-day outings where you don't want to pack too many articles of clothing. It's also very comfortable. It tends to cost twice as much as other base layer alternatives.

I have a few pairs of Smartwool socks, which is made from the merino wool. And i will also vouch for the keeping odors down. I can wear these for a few days and they dont stink as bad as my other socks i used to wear after a few days. I was looking at there base layers a few weeks ago.I think they would be great. They also dry out rather quick. They recommend you do not use fabric softeners, because they coat the Merino wool fibers and reduce the fibers' ability to naturally manage moisture and regulate your body temperature and the ability to repell body odor..

I already enjoy a few merino wool items; few things are good substitutes.

I don't think I'll be buying the solar-powered boombox for any upcoming caving trips.

Cool. Nice to know that merino wool is the real thing.

I'd like to take the hydration pack and turn it into a giant generator for a carbide lamp. Probably burn for a few days with that much volume.

If you do it right. Else, you might have a very bright and incredibly brief flame.
