CONCEPT FRIDAY - 2/10/12 - Improved Single Compass Case

*CONCEPT FRIDAY - Improved Single Compass Case*

I realized yesterday that the double Compass/Clino case will not work. When the two instruments are put back-to-back, there is too much "stuff" below the compass. It would be almost impossible to get a good compass reading to a downhill station with the double case.

I might try a side-by-side case eventually, but for now, I'm going back to the single case.

I added two strips of webbing on the eyepiece end. This will hold the instrument in and leave the eyepiece unobstructed. The other end is where the instrument is slipped into the case. Three flaps of Velcro hold everything together(including the Lexan).

Overall, this is the first case that I'm satisfied with. I would feel comfortable taking THIS case caving. However, there are still some improvements that I can make. I think I can reduce the bulk of the Velcro(while keeping it secure) and I can make a change to the overall construction for a better fit. The case also needs a small D ring for a neckstrap.

Caves are rare and precious things. Cavers...even more so. Treat each accordingly.

How about a case for the tandem?

I cringe at the thought. Good thing I don't have one...so I can't try. :tonguecheek:

Totally different concept than Rick's design, but have you seen this?

I have. It's not too useful for cave surveying since it doesn't cover the important bits. As Scott often suggests, I have used packing tape to protect eyepiece and lens from mud, with mixed results. No matter what, a little dirt gets in under the edges of the tape, and has in one case drawn uneasy glances from a cave owner requesting thorough decontamination. It's also difficult to adjust the eyepiece when it's protected by tape, a step often necessary when sharing instruments with someone with differing eyesight.

A case with lexan lenses and easily manipulated closures that could cover the eyepieces during transport would be perfect, if nearly impossible to create.

A similar case for the Tandem is not impossible, just difficult.
If I started with two vinyl pockets.... then Velcro two flaps over.........

Ehhh....
I'm done with tiny, intricate projects for a week or two. If the fabric arrives in time, I'm building a seat cover for my Blazer. :big grin:
