Reactive Lighting - Future of Cave Headlamps?

Postby BrianFrank » Jan 29, 2012 7:08 pm

This light looks amazing. The NAO Headlamp available in July from Petzl. But, what happens if mud covers the sensor?

Battery life seems to come up short with this light:

It will dim every time another caver shines THEIR light at you.
Not for me.
Caves are rare and precious things. Cavers...even more so. Treat each accordingly.

Good point.

You would think at some point that Petzl with their enormous resources, would make a light that competes in brightness capabilities with Rude Nora and Scurion.

1. This is not a caving light.
2. Never buy the first generation of a new product. Especially, a gimmicky one, like this.

Yeah, the built in USB port is kind of questionable... I doubt it would last very long underground.

Actually after looking at the specs, this thing puts out 355 lm but for how long? The spec sheet is very confusing.
Anyway it's a moog point, I would never buy it.

Actully bidding on a st6 right now!

Very true. This seems like a nice hiking light for around camp and that last stretch before reaching camp--plus the late-night sprints to the latrine.

At this generation, it's nowhere near cave-ready. The USB idea is nice if you have a USB-compatible solar power source (becoming common and is easily adapted). In ten or fifteen years, they might have it beefed up a bit with better batteries and durability.

I agree with Scott. This ain't no friggin cavin light. Very cool technology. Will be interested to see where this goes. Next thing the lights will be responding to verbal commands. "ZEBRA FULL POWER" Oh yeah!
