The Rolex for speleologists

Postby JR-Orion » Jan 4, 2012 9:33 pm

Saw this ad in Esquire or GQ. I'm not sure how many speleologists and polar explorers read those magazine, but anyway-

(Sorry about the picture quality)

It's the Rolex Explorer II. Seems to go for $5000 - $6000.

I have to admit, it's a good looking watch. And I understand the appeal of owning a tough, heirloom quality watch to pass on to my son. But I don't know if I could wear something that expensive in a cave.

Either way, I let my wife know about the Rolex for speleologists.

Huh. Rolex has been sponsoring adventurers for a while. Lots of info here. Rolex even sponsored some of Bill Stone's expeditions. Hmm, I do need a new caving watch.

Also, if you haven't looked, the Rolex website is amazing.

I read Sheck Exley's book "Caverns Measureless to Man" and in this book he said he always used a cheap Casio watch for his deep dives. I think he wore two as for divers the watch was very important to time their decompression stops. Sheck used these cheap watches for dives in the 800 feet range. I figure if the cheap sport watch was good enough for Sheck it is certainly good enough for me.

Just for fun while working offshore we tied a cheap casio to the outside of a diving bell. I think it was rated to 200m(around 650') We were working around 900' and the watch was fine. Nowadays I uses a Suunto watch but that's cause it gives me a redundant dive computer.

I've been trying for years, but I still haven't managed to kill my $20 Casio digital watch. So I don't see the point of paying $5,000 for a caving watch.

I found it kind of interesting that the Rolex was in the $5000 - $6000 range, as my watch is also in a range that involves fives, sixes, and zeroes-

Just over two years of abuse underground and underwater, and still going strong.
