Dying a cave suit

Postby pebblepoint » Mar 19, 2006 12:05 am

Today, a friend told me that his new $150 cave suit that he waited 3 months for was built in the wrong color. Lime green. He won't wear it. He could send it back and wait another 3 months but I suggested he dye it.
Does anyone have experience with this?
What color might he use somewhat lessen the effect of lime green?
Thanks.

The darker, the better. Nothing darker than black.

Once dyed make sure to run it through the washer about 10 times. Dying anything else does not require you to wash it so many times because most anything else is not meant to get wet as badly as a caving suit.

Is the suit nylon? That's hard to dye.

But the simplist solution is to wear it in the crawliest, muddiest cave you can find. If you're from Little Egypt, surely there are some caves like that close at hand. I bought a "banana" suit a couple years ago. I wasn't exactly happy with it, but did want something that would be bright in a photograph. Well THAT lasted about 2 cave trips! Now it looks like a vaguely yellowish mud color.

Personally I would LOVE a lime colored suit. In fact, now that I've heard they exist, I may specifically try and get one. I'd offer to buy it from your friend, but I'm sure it won't fit. Nothing fits me.

He could sell it here at Cavechat in the Speleo-Marketplace.

Lime green heh. Too bad it doesn't glow in the dark, now that would be interesting.

Who cares what color it is. Tell him to complain and ask for 10% off (or whatever makes him happier) since they goofed up.

After wearing it a few times it won't be as bright and this way he won't ever have to be worried about looking like the rest of the people with a red suit.

Hey Don, He can give the suit to me and I'll dirty it up for him. Hell, I can even send it back to him dirty. I'm great for last minute gear cleaning anyway.

Of course, it would probably be skin tight on me.

I just ran across this stuff. It's a sprayable fabric dye.

http://premiumautocare.com/semcocoae.html

The review I read claimed it worked pretty good on nylon fabric, a military backpack specifically. They also said that plain old spray paint does a descent job. I imagine you would use the spray paint like a wood stain. Spray it on, let sit for a minute, then wipe it off.

Good luck!
