What's YOUR helmet light??

Postby rlboyce » Dec 10, 2010 11:45 am

I'm interested in knowing what most cavers use for helmet lights, and judging from the recent requests for light recommendations it appears others are interested too. So, could you all tell me what you currently have on your helmet? Please list every light source by namebrand, model and if it's your primary, secondary, etc. If you have a flashlight mounted, please list this as well. Any other pertinent info about your lights such as first hand observations of waterproofness or energy consumption is welcome. Finally, please keep opinions/criticisms of others' lights to a minimum, as multiple side discussions can make this thread confusing. I'll go first:

Primary: Princeton Tec Apex (130 lumen)
Secondary: Coleman Axis

Thanks! :looking:

My primary light is a B&B #4D that uses 4 D cell batteries. I've been using it for over 25 years. The light is now discontinued but I have 3 more of the same light.

1st - Sten (do other primary lights even exist???)
2nd - Petzl Tikka
3rd - Petzl Tikka XP

The Tikka lives on my helmet and the Tikka XP lives in my dry keg. Philosophy here is that I can have the light from the Tikka avaliable immediately if the Sten were to die. I have the more powerful Tikka XP avaliable to run as a primary light to cave out on. Both backup lights use the same batteries so there is no need to carry two kinds of batteries.

Primary, a Stenlight - of course.
Secondary - Zebralight H51. This is a recent change, and I like it. It tends to get turned on by accident, but other than that it works well. I have it mounted on a band above the Stenlight, off to the side just enough so it can shine down on my survey book. It rotates easily, to shine forward if need be.

Primary: Princeton Tec Corona (90 lumens, flood)
Secondary: was a Coleman something or other, now it's bashed and dead (said it was 70 lumens...not sure I believe that, prolly more like 50)

Will be:
Primary: Fenix HP10 (225 lumens)
Secondary: Corona

EDIT: OHHEY I needed AAA batteries for my graphic calculator and I put a different set in the Coleman just for the helluvit since maybe I put in dead batteries instead of good ones (they all got a little mixed up in the UK) or maybe it was the fact that I opened it all up a bit more and found crushed peanuts inside of it. Don't ask, I have no clue. Maybe a squirrel borrowed it. I cleaned off all the connector thingies and put it back together and hey it works like it's supposed to now. Hehe. I guess I do have a backup light. Woo! I still want the HP10 though.

Once you see what the most common choices are, you should make this into a poll.

Primary: Bisun P51
Permanent backup: FenIx E01
Sometimes carried: Zebralight H50

(Probably worth saying that I make the Bisun lights, and haven't sold any outside Europe.)

PT Apex - Helmet (170 lumen model. Absolutely wonderful light in my opinion, though the LED tech is starting to age.)

PT Aurora - Backpack (Kinda shitty, I need to buy a better backup. 3xAAA, very purple light, not waterproof, not very bright.)

4Sevens Preon 1 - Neck cord (My EDC flashlight, 1xAAA. Bright, small, multi-mode, new model LED. Pretty much a perfect flashlight.)

I'm thinking about getting a zebralight to replace my current backup headlamp.
Darkness is impossible to remember. Consequently, cavers desire to return to the unseen depths where they have just been.
Darkness never satisfies. Darkness cannot satisfy. Especially if it takes something away, which it almost invariably does.

I use an Apex. (#4 is about to have battery case problems)

I love the Apex since the batteries are in the back and it never screws up my survey readings. Sketchers can keep their Stens.

Back up is now a Princeton Tec Byte and a Quad. I have had problems with the Quad turning on in my pack that I am still trying to find a good solution to.

Black Diamond Spot is now the third when Apex is in for annual exchange. I hate seeing the regulator blink when I look at paper, so I went for another new Princeton Tec when the old one was sent in for repairs.

Also retired all Petzls from caving as mine did not have removable headbands for decon.
