Postby rickster » Jun 22, 2010 4:41 pm

Im not sure what this material is, but after watching a top 20 countdown of man vs wild the other day.I couldnt help making a note of the pants the guy was wearing, with the leg patches and reinforcements...what do you think?

90 bucks sounds steep for pants especially when I suspect you can have a custom pair of cave pants from a cave vendor for less than that. These pants remind me of a pair of grouse hunting pants I had back in the early 80s when I started caving. They were made of heavy work pant material with a PVC like protection on the front of the legs and the seat.I loved those and they worked out great for caving, until I got too fat for them.
It only takes one person to surrender a dog to a kill shelter ,but it takes many to rescue it.

If the pants are anything like some of Bear's shows, they are probably just masquerading as serious outdoor apparel. There have been several discussions of his "Man vs Wild" shows, including this one: http://forums.caves.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9386 Much of what is on his show(s) is fakery, so I wouldn't feel good about buying anything with his name on it myself. It is also a bit pricey as well- I suspect you would be paying mostly for the name.

I have a pair of his pants and love them! I have not tried them caving and probably won't, as I have much cheaper alternatives. They are extremely comfortable and durable. Minus my pjs, they are probably the most comfortable pants I own.

After everything I've read about this guy, I'm gonna pass on $90 Bear Gryliss Survivor Trousers.

The pants seem based on a mountaineering bibs/pant without the liner. They most likely would be a good caving pant but you can get some very good coveralls for not a lot more.
