Cracked Stenlight Cover

Postby Darklight » Feb 12, 2006 4:27 pm

Check your Sten S7 cover "glass". I think I may have overtightened the bezel during reflector change. Today, after a cave trip, I noticed condensation on the inside of the unit. Disassembly and inspection revealed stress cracks in the cover. See image:

Note the two circular shaped fractures. I don't think there is any damage, but I am glad I caught it when I did.

Chris
How tight did you snug down those screws, anyway? I'm a bit leery of taking my Stenlight apart, but then I don't really have any reason. One of my caving buds did "flip" the bracket on the back (to move the switch to the right side of the headpiece) and says his bracket is now wacko.

Well, you really can't overtighten them. And, I always do the tire lug nut thing whereby you alternatively tighten bolts.

OK. So, they can be overtightened....;-)

Well, I managed to crack another Sten cover window. Think I figured it out, with the guidance of David and Hank at Sten.

They were able to help me with the proper way to disassemble and reassemble the Sten. I added a few notes to my Sten page, specifically http://www.pbase.com/image/56003174

Turns out I was the cause of my problems....

Chris-
What type of material is the front made of? Looks to be acrylic. If so I recommend cutting one from Lexan (polycarbonate) I just built a 9 watt system and used Lexan on it. Extremely tough.
