New Scurion 1500 Model

Postby rlboyce » Feb 3, 2011 3:50 pm

Looks like Scurion has a new model that is using the awesome XM-L Cree LEDs. I may just have to follow suit with my own light project!

Does anyone know how they heatsink the bare emitter??

It's a keeper cable so you don't lose the top cover for the battery box when you open it to charge/replace the battery. The screw you mentioned secures the battery box to your helmet.

An afterthought to compensate for an uninspired design.

Jansen is correct. Its not absolutely necessary. As I usually only find myself opening the battery box at my house to charge it. The same thing could be accomplished with a small bit of accessory cord as well.

It is possible to lose the lid underground if the top of the box is knocked on a ceiling or whatever - as happened to a friend of mine. This was what prompted the optional addition of a keeper cable, not so much to stop you losing the lid when you take it off intentionally.

I wonder if heat management is keeping them from driving the LED's at full current. Either way, it's nice to see a manufacturer adopting the latest tech. :kewl:

Luke, I would say that you are probably right about the heat management issue. Still, 725 per emitter is plenty of lumens and to drive them at full current would almost be impractical for caving. Although, LOL, some light nuts would say you can never have enough light.

Think I see how they heat sink the bare emitter. It is not a complete ID. The LED sits on a column of sorts.

Depending on the size of the space you're in, the depth of the pit you're trying to scope out, or the amount of headlamp-assisted photography you're doing, I would definitely say that can be true! Call me a nut if you like.

As far as battery life impracticality goes, the brightest modes on a headlamp are only ever used for short tasks so that's not really a concern. Even heat management can be partially avoided due to this fact.
