It gave a block in which you're supposed to paste text. It doesn't give any instructions about what sort of text you're supposed to give it. But at the bottom there are radio buttons for fiction, nonfiction and blog entries. So I pasted in the email I just sent someone on where not to go mountain biking (based on my experiences yesterday--too much traffic and eroding trails), plus the mental state of a mutual friend, and I called it a blog entry.

The Gender Genie clearly pegged me as "female."

(Note, as I was trying to find "instructions" I hit the "survey" button thinking it would take me to something useful, but instead it just gave me near endless survey questions)

What really sucks is that if any guy were to go there and come up female they would never post that they had. So we will never know if it goes both ways.

I gave it 3 trys using 3 blog entries without any mention of my gender. Here are the results:

Words: 404
(NOTE: The genie works best on texts of more than 500 words.)

Female Score: 298
Male Score: 365
The Gender Genie thinks the author of this passage is: male!

Words: 589
(NOTE: The genie works best on texts of more than 500 words.)

Female Score: 329
Male Score: 1246
The Gender Genie thinks the author of this passage is: male!

Words: 430
(NOTE: The genie works best on texts of more than 500 words.)

Female Score: 315
Male Score: 613
The Gender Genie thinks the author of this passage is: male!

Well, sorry to spoil your stereotype tallgirl. ( I also note that by cleverly saying that "any guy... would never post..." you are using an underhanded female technique to elicit a response)

I tried this five times with 5 pieces of text: 1 email, 3 parts of a paper, 1 part of a cave description. My results were:
email - male
1 paper part - male
2 paper parts - female
cave description - female

I think this algorithm needs some work.

People interested in this topic should read the works of Suzette Haden Elgin. Or, just read an overtly ladies', and then a men's magazine, and note the differences not only in topics, but in forms of expression. There really are two separate languages.

The reason the cave report likely was branded female is because descriptive science is written in passive third person. It's word choice and order, the inclusion or exclusion of adjectives and adverbs, the number of queries and verb selection which make differences.

Fun stuff. I picked a paragraph from an email I wrote a friend this weekend and found out I'm female! So much for the bathroom mirror.

Entered this from Barbara's post: "It gave a block in which you're supposed to paste text. It doesn't give any instructions about what sort of text you're supposed to give it. But at the bottom there are radio buttons for fiction, nonfiction and blog entries. So I pasted in the email I just sent someone on where not to go mountain biking (based on my experiences yesterday--too much traffic and eroding trails), plus the mental state of a mutual friend, and I called it a blog entry."

It says that post is "male". Hmm..., um, hmmmm.

I'm not even going to continue this fun by giving it some of my old posts...

On the subject of men and women and the different thought processes...

From the UK:

Eccentric astronomer Sir Patrick Moore has claimed that TV is worse today because the BBC is run by women.

The presenter of The Sky At Night also belittled female newsreaders in an interview with Radio Times, describing them as "these jokey women".

Sir Patrick, 84, criticised the BBC for showing interesting programmes very late at night, especially the 650th edition of The Sky At Night, which was put out at 2am.

The trouble is that the BBC now is run by women and it shows: soap operas, cooking, quizzes, kitchen-sink plays. You wouldn't have had that in the golden days," he said.

"I would like to see two independent wavelengths - one controlled by women, and one for us, controlled by men. I think it may eventually happen."

The TV veteran also said he would "rather be dead in a ditch" than appear on Celebrity Big Brother and he compared the soap opera EastEnders to diarrhoea.

When asked about his television "guilty pleasure", he said: "I used to watch Doctor Who and Star Trek, but they went PC - making women commanders, that kind of thing. I stopped watching."

Sir Patrick has presented The Sky At Night since April 1957, making him the longest-serving television presenter.

The xylophone-playing cricket enthusiast was knighted and appointed as a member of the Royal Society in 2001.
