My sick sense of humor actually found that a little funny... in a sad, corny way.

My wife got to see him in concert with the Monkees 24 years ago. No joke.

Hey, hey... :waving:

It's unfortunate that the fellow died, but I thought that the name Davey Jones in the Jokes forum was a bit funny all by itself.

I was just being hatched when Jansen's wife saw him in concert, so I have no real grasp on their original popularity. It's a little hard for me to respect a group whos biggest hit was written by Neil Diamond.

Poor taste, perhaps, but funny all the same.

I thought their biggest hit was "Hey Hey We're the Monkies."

No sir. It's the great classic alluded to in Phil's wisecrack. Written and recorded by Neil Diamond in '66 or '67 and thereafter by enough folks to sink a battleship.

Incidentally, it's Davy Jones not Davey Jones.

And now just for fun... :woohoo:

Yea I remember The Monkees well. I used to watch them every Saturday morning back in the early 70's. My oldest sister had all their records so I heard all those songs hundreds of times. Davy Jones actually had a home not far from where I grew up in those beautiful central Pennsylvania mountains. He said in an interview once he bought that farm because it reminded him of where he grew up in the U.K.

Rest In Peace brother.

Say what you will about "The Prefab Four" but basically they (well their handlers) did invent the music video.

Actually most self-appointed experts in this subject credit Don Van Vliet AKA Captain Beefheart with making the first music video:

I did say basically ...... lets just say that they used a weekly tv show to promote themselves and sell records and yes Elvis did movies and so did the Beatles before this tv show, however the Monkees did take it to a whole new level of crass commercialism.

Having actually lived then, (yes young , but aware) I will add that I should have said , successfully, and noticed even in the fringe of mainstream.
While this Beefheart guy may be your idea of something great, I can't find a friend even older than me (which makes them your grand parents or better aged) who thinks he was anything more than an obscure foot note to R&R. Saying that Beefheart was even noticed is like saying the BLOB was Steve McQ's best movie.
