Here in Asheville, NC, the cicadas are out in force. They just about cover the kids slide and sandbox. They really like tires for some reason. The kids sat fascinated this weekend watching one literally climb out of its skin. We can hear them calling from inside the house with all the windows and doors shut. Amazing creatures.

Do you have cicadas around you now?

Brood XIV is expected to appear in at least parts of Georgia, Kentucky, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

I guess this is a different brood than the one that showed up here in NoVa 2-3 years ago.

I used to work on the same floor as some agricultural entomologists. When the 17-year brood hit in East TN a couple of years ago I saw a lot of peanut butter cookies with a cicada planted firmly atop. They weren't half bad. :yikes:

Copperheads feast and rely heavily on cicada hatches - watch yer ankles!

The west end of the Smokies (Cades Cove) seems to be a hot spot. You can see their burrows along ridge tops in some areas. Note: the bears are fat and sassy eating them right now...a break from the usual lean food supply this time of year...
