HEY! She's from SC, not NC. I'm offended. We have maps in NC.

Anyway, here's the transcript:
"I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because...ah some...people out there in our nation don't have maps and...ah...I believe that eh-education such as in South Africa and the Iraq everywhere like such as and I believe that they should....our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S. or-or should help south Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future for our gen..."

:exactly: A college student recently explained to me that she learns spelling while texting because the first couple of letters have to be correct for the auto complete to work! At least she will know the first 3 letters of each word.

How many people do you know who speak in complete sentences, especially when they are frazzled?

Now, beauty contests are supposed to expose talent and poise. It doesn't follow that just because you look like Barbie (someone has decided 'beauty' means the most Barbie-like-- has anyone else noticed?) that you can think on your feet.

I've never quite understood why society expects girls in beauty contests to be otherwise talented, (art or music, intelligence, scholar, do-gooder, etc.) but it's OK for Mr. America or Pretty Boy Model only to smile suggestively or grunt.

We have raised people to talk and think later. This girl does this excellently. If you are old fashioned enough to think before you speak, 1) the conversation is over before you contribute and 2) people think you are 'slow'.

I'm sure she thought this was the Miss "Valley Girl" contest.

Here's another video of Ms SC on the Today Show where she gives the answer she would have given had she heard what the question was. Or something like that...

I thought she handled her mea culpa real well...

I was impressed at the host and hostess who were so THRILLED that she got the *right* answer by saying that if you couldn't find the US on a map then there should be more emphasis on geography in schools.

"Yay! You got the right answer!!!" My god, that was such hard one!!! I'll bet you studied all week to make sure you got it right this time! Hooray!!!!!

Yes, I'm cynical. We used to give Rocks for Jocks students geography exams before we'd let 'em pass freshmen geology. You wouldn't believe the answers we got. North Carolina was placed south of South Carolina.

You know that big body of water south of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama--the Red Sea.

Those islands in a north south line sort of near Korea dangling down from the Russian pennisula? The ones with all the earthquakes? Costa Rica.

How 'bout the student who knew that Toronto was in Canada, so if she put Toronto down for every province, she'd get at least one of them right. Wouldn't she?
