How to Celebrate a Big Birthday?

Postby Squirrel Girl » May 9, 2007 5:01 pm

My brother's birthday is coming up soon. My ecalendar say he's gonna be 60, so I figure I ought to do something special. But I'm horrible at thinking of something special. He has little interest in caving, but he's way into golf. He is retired, but he was an engineer and now works part time doing computer support.

Any of you guys got any ideas of what I should do? He lives about 3 hours north of me. So it's not easy for me to get there, especially on the day, which is mid-week.

My Dad turned sixty not too long before he retired. At his retirement party, Mom and the kids gave him one of those NASCAR experience things, where they go and drive a real race car at a real track. He did it at Texas Motorspeedway. It was great! Maybe they do that at Dover?

My brother *was* a real race car driver. When I was wayyyy too little to drive, our family had a drag racing car. Just a souped up Impala (I think it was). My dad, brother, and my sister used to race it. My sister got written up in the newspaper because at the time it was a big deal that a gurl would do such a thing.

My brother blew the engine in the car once. I guess my dad got really mad at him for it, too. But then they sold the car before I was old enough to drive.

I'm not sure if going in circles would rekindle his youth, or would be a been there done that sort of thing.

How about an aerial combat sort of thing? They have one here in Colorado... you go up in a World War II plane and dogfight with another World War II plane. Or skydiving? Something he'll remember the rest of his life.

My "depends" comment was a double entendre if you didn't figure it out (since he's turning 60).

you could always just get him something he likes but in an absurd quantity(60 preferably). Like 60 cases of his favorite beer delivered to his front step! 60 cupcakes! You know go for overkill so he can be like "$#!+ thats alot of____"

I just turned 60 myself last year. Since he's an engineer get him a sailboat if you can afford it, or a 2-3 day charter on one, balloon rides are great as are sail plane rides, new library card, Home Depot gift card, ask him for advice or what he thinks about something (engineers love that), a flat panel TV for his bathroom or shop, a nice battery powered drill.

I took my wife on a balloon ride up the Brandywine Valley (PA) on one of anniversaries and she absolutely loved it.

Or, like Wayne said, Depends.

Just did that in New Zealand for the wife's birthday recently (she's only half of sixty, though). Worked out great! :big grin:

Agree totally with the "doing something special/dramatic" theme. :kewl:

hi

how about a ride in a glider?

Not the your hangig from some canvas out in the breeze kind but the big metal flying kind without an engine...

I did that last year and it was a blast...

My WAG is there is a probably sailplane club nearby that offers rides for somewhere between 50-100 dollars....and if you offer to pay more they will probably give a longer flight...

just a though

You say your bro is 3 hrs away? Hmmm..I know there is an airport near Frederick in the Catoctin Mtns, up Camp David way that does glider rides. It is an awesome experience, almost no sound at all and the movement is great.
