ok i don't do it, but i found one by accident while investigating a homicide. seems the geocache box was in close proximity to the body (not related to each other though). The geocache was removed from the scene for about a week until we figured out the 'who dun it' for the homicide, and then i returned the box to its location, even signed the log book, placed my business card and some crime scene tape inside. the same box had been 'found' again by accident, a month earlier by our K9 unit and a neighboring PD's K-9 unti while training in the area, they signed the log and left some stuff in there too. Funny that we both located it since its in an out of the way place and in the woods as well.

I have enough hobbies that I've avoided this one but I have a caving buddy who is way into it. He works as a cave managment specialist and started investigating geocaching after discovering them hidden at/in cave entries. He then got hooked and is now always trying to stop to look for a cache when we are going somewhere. Anyway, he is still opposed to caches in cave entries and I'm curious what other cavers think? Should geocaching be forbidden at cave entries (on public land in this case)? The basic argument is that it is 1) attracting unwanted attention to the cave entry and 2) posting the GPS coords for an entry on the web. Anyway, just curious...

My experience is that most cachers are interesting in finding the cache, not going caving. If someone has the property owner's permission to place the cache, I have no problem with it at all. My wife and I have met a bunch of nice geocachers at local geocaching picnics, and even bumped into people looking for the same cache in remote locations.

We love caches that involve hiking. There is one near us that is at least a four mile hike each way to get the cache. We are planning on hitting a few caches over the comming weekend. (Too bad I won't be caving. :mad2: :sadbanana: )

Wildwolf, I thought about it but was more interested in the opinions of people who are both geocachers and cavers. I also didn't feel like stepping into the middle of a :duel: and maybe getting :hitsfan: ...

iCave, thanks for the response I guess I had thought about it as a way of pointing out a cave specifically as opposed to just finding the box.

Anyway I'm outta here to go :kaver: :formations: (edit, forgot to finish the sentence) for a week so don't expect a quick response

Have a look at this topic on the UK caving oranisation, the British Caving Association, website about a silly place for a geocache.

Looks like the few cachers who attempted this cache had good sense. They all turned back when they realized what they were in for. Just goes to show that cachers can have good sense. Luckly, the cache referenced in the discussion was removed. While I see no problem with caches near cave entrances, putting a cache in a tough cave is just plain dumb.

I have actually just discovered this myself about 2 weeks ago and it is really fun I have only found 1 cache so far but I have only looked for a couple and only the one I found was during light hours so I made it hard on myself.

My geocaching name is dark_storm83.

I've been caching a couple of years now. I usually go with CaverScott, even though he won't admit it.

It's a fun way to get some exercise on the way home from a caving trip.
