Unwelcoming Attitude

Postby jonsdigs » Nov 16, 2006 6:58 pm

I could expect the moderators to censor this critique but I have noticed on some occasions (Myotis sodalis, Here it is Marty,) folks get carried away in "I know more than you do" hyper-critique of minor details. :argue: I know some folks have differing philosophies and varying standards and emphasis but do we have to tear apart a low skills trip or impugn the cave ethics of someone who just wants a bat ID?

I like to read trip reports and try to contribute but am put off by a potential atmosphere of witch hunt.

What's to be done?

Point taken but I just wondered how much the moderators should moderate.

My view is "as little as possible" and generally only to enforce the Terms of Service of the forum, or act on complaints (not complaint, but complaints. More than one generally shows something may be amiss).

As for the "I know more than you do" syndrome, I see that all the time at Grotto meetings.... What I call the "My rope is longer than your rope" argument.

The "tone" of this forum is MUCH different than my local mountain bike club's. That one is more active. There isn't too much moderation, but when it comes, it's decisive, and no one complains.

There, profanity is tolerated, but not often used.

A day or two ago a relatively new guy (who, by the way, is a marine), suggested a new subforum. But the history behind that subject is that if you're into that type of biking, you've "drunk the koolaid." The first response was, literally:

*vomit*

Let's see how many more ways we can separate everyone... Hmmmm....

That precipitated a tumble of probably a hundred responses. Most were humorously derisive. One newbie woman defended the original guy and said we should be kinder. Lots of people agreed she had valid points, then went on to make tons of more jokes. It degenerated to (or ascended to) really bad jokes, and a heavy discussion of what kind of jokes are OK, what aren't (eg., racist or sexist) and why.

Along the way, an even newer guy posted this link:
Image

I posted that was offensive, but also hysterically funny. It's now my favorite buzz phrase.

I have a problem with being a smart alec. I hope a good natured smart alec, but one nonetheless. I fit in ever so well with the local mountain bike club because we are ALWAYS poking fun at each other.

Weirdly, after returning a pair of shoes to the mall after work tonight, honest to god, I saw a young woman WEARING A TIARA coming out the mall!!!!!!!!!!

So, with all due respect, and with absolutely no malice,
SUCK IT UP, PRINCESS!!!!

I think alot of arguments can start because of miss interpriting text. Since we do not speak person to person then it is hard to tell. A person may be saying something, but with out the emotions to read, they could be saying something completely different. Also, it is not just emotions, there are alot of other things too, like a persons personality, some people say "I hate you!" and others say the same thing but it means "I like you" depending on what social group you hang out with.

Jonsdigs,

This forum overall is really very polite, except for some of the off topics. Those went through a phase a few months ago, but the tone has cooled off considerably. I'm impressed by the level of civility here.

I frequent another political forum and the tone is much more harsh and abrasive. There are posters who are on a mission about such things as spelling, grammar, factual errors and just personal issues.

I think this is one of the best behaved places on the net.

have to do with anything in this thread? Or anything whatsoever? :caver:

I'm just feeling extremely clueless about that posting. I've heard of the NORBA that you mentioned, Phil, though don't know much about it. I think they sponsor races or something. Me? I'm more the IMBA sort of gal.

Anyway, it's not the only NORBA in the universe, and I was just confused as to why our fellow Cavechatter mentioned it.

Not criticizing, just wondering what was going on. I suppose it might have something to do with ridemonkey. I avoid ridemonkey, but someone put that photo link to a picture on their site. I don't know if there's a particular connection between ridemonkey and IMBA or not.

Nah, first off, mods arent going to censor critiques.. you pretty much got to push every button and pull every string to cause action against you.

About an unwelcoming attitude, well that all depends on who you are talking to. Most folks here are very welcoming, and quite friendly. Some arent. Its sort of like any organization, or society in general: most folks are cool, but there's always a butt-head in the crowd.

I'm active on quite a few forums of all sorts of interests and really they are all the same way in how people interact. Dont take it personally, and learn to ignore folks who you have a hard time getting along with. If you cant do that, then there is always the ignore button.

Sorry for the confusion. :-) I do miss mountain biking though. Gotta get the old girl fixed back up. It's amazing how many miles you can rack up when you don't own a car. I had 94 Trek 930 that I racked up over 14000 miles on in its first two years. I really miss being that fit. Hopefully I will find the time to do it again. The races started getting really political in the mid to late 90's I guess that along with lack of time is what I drifted away from it. Yep Barb I was in the good old IMBA as well. Great organization. NORBA lost it for me when Jeep no longer sponsored it :-( Haven't checked on it in so long. Maybe its cool again.
