Tower work

Postby GroundquestMSA » Jan 27, 2015 2:36 pm

The company that gives me the bulk of my work has recently dropped all of its installers, myself included, so I'm feeling around for a different sort of work. I have some relatives who have recently done some routine tower maintenance, changing bulbs, replacing equipment, etc. I am interested in getting involved in such work and am asking far and wide for advice on getting started. Give me a holler if anyone has any tips.

Thanks!

Jonah -

Have you considered anything more aligned with your literary talents (journalism, tech writing, freelance, ad cetera). Whilst tower work has much to recommend it (outdoors, on rope), you clearly have both passion and skill in assembling words. Something to consider.

A friend of mine cleans and inspects wind turbine blades. It involves lots of rope work and he really loves it.

I've considered it, but I'm not really interested. I have done a few freelance jobs, which I hated. Being assigned to write about convincingly on topics I don't care about is something like torture. If I could write about things that I was interested in or write for some honorable purpose I might change my mind. There's also money to consider. I'm not used to making much, but I do need to pay the bills.

Where, geographically, does he work? I have thought about this too, but I would have to move.

He works in Cali, but these things are popping up all over the nation. I know it's not a regular 9-5 gig. He works like a couple of weeks at a time, or basically the time it take to do the job, then has a week or so off. He lives in a van out where ever the job takes him. I know one draw back is that he can only do it when the wind is calm and under a certain mile per hour. He gets paid a little bit while waiting around, but the big bucks are made when he is on rope. :kewl:

Hi Jonah,

Until very recently I made a living climbing towers, wind turbines, smokestacks etc. The life has much to recommend, but involves quite a bit of travel. If you have any questions feel free to PM or email me and I will answer whatever I can.
