Better Sex Through Gender Equality?

(AP) Japanese adults can't get enough satisfaction, but Austria's mojo is working.

Sex is more satisfying in countries where women and men are considered equal, according to an international study of people between the ages of 40 and 80 by researchers at the University of Chicago.

Austria topped the list of 29 nations studied, with 71 percent of those surveyed reported being satisfied with their sex lives.

Spain, Canada, Belgium and the United States also reported high rates of satisfaction.

The lowest satisfaction rate — 25.7 percent — was reported in Japan.

The study was led by sociologist Edward Laumann, considered a top authority on the sociology of sex. He believes the findings show that relationships based on equality lead to more satisfaction for both genders.

"Male-centered cultures where sexual behavior is more oriented toward procreation tend to discount the importance of sexual pleasure for women," Laumann said.

"When mama's not happy, nobody's happy," he said.

The study appears in the April issue of the Archives of Sexual Behavior. It was funded by Pfizer, which makes the impotence drug Viagra.

Researchers surveyed 27,500 people by phone, in person or by mail, depending on local practices. The difference in questioning methods was one of the study's limitations, the researchers noted.

A nation's level of health and education could contribute to the findings, said John DeLamater, a professor at the University of Wisconsin and editor of the International Journal of Sex Research, who was not involved in the research.

"It's conceivable that people in developed countries have more information about sexuality. And they're also healthier," DeLamater said. "Being better informed, and being in better shape, they may be more able to maintain a satisfying sex life."

So, is sex important to life? More important than finding happiness? I'm not sure why this is a topic for discussion. I think sex is highly overrated and Americans are being sold a bill of goods--as one novel once expressed it: "The pursuit of sex is like being sold dream food--sweet as cotton candy, and as insubstantial."

Uh, speaking as a guy, sex IS happiness. Happiness w/o sex is an oxymoron.

Teresa, Yes sex is important to life. Where would we be without it? Finding happiness is important and making your partner happy during a sexual arouse is very important. If you are going to be asked to do that again, your partner had better be happy.
Pursuit of sex is a dream and as a dream is insubstantial. But once captured and enjoyed to the fullest, it is the romance and sharing of a very strong emotion that wars have been fought over. In the sharing and enjoyment of the event can be the happiest and sweetest in all of nature.
Americans have not been "sold a bill of goods" and neither has the Italians or French or anyone else who has lived and loved.

So if you feel this way I'm sorry you haven't found that one or two who can show you the wonderful sweet romance of sex.

Although I'm a nurse (or maybe it is because I'm a nurse :hairpull: ) I look with distrust at any study done by a drug company.

Maybe if you see the whole study report it tells you what percentage of the responders were male or female. To me it seems the study would be biased if mostly one gender was represented in the survey.

That said, I think sex is a good thing :woohoo:
