Rock Gravestones

Postby gindling » Dec 25, 2012 12:29 pm

Does anyone have any info on how widespread this type of gravestone is and whether or not it is found outside of middle Tennessee? They are formed of two slabs leaning against each other with a cap on both ends and a long iron rod threaded through a hole midpoint on each end stone and held by bolts. I know of only two places but I suspect there are more. One is at the beginning of the trail leading to Waterfall Plunge and the other is Davis Cemetery near Big Bottom.

Here are a couple of links about comb graves.

I don't know more about them except some of the other cavers have pictures from different places of them.

very interesting. Ive always wondered about them because my extended family in Kentucky builds House Graves and I thought they might be more modern versions of these tent/comb graves. Here is a photo of a family plot in Kentucky, the truck camper is covering a grave that has yet to have a house built on top.
