Well, not really knowing where to hunt, and not having any time to perform a hunt, I took the city way out and *bought* Morels. Now keep in mind they run $50 / pound, so it wasn't like I was gonna buy a pound or anything. No, I bought, *two* mushrooms. Yep, just two. Big ones, but still, just two.

I sauteed them in butter tonight and they were nice. Not really worth $50 / pound, I don't suppose, but they were good and I got to enjoy a treat.

A few years ago I found *one* morel growing in the woods out behind my house. I sauteed it and boy it was good! But I haven't seen any since, and sure do wish I could find some more.
We have lots of Chanterelles in the woods around my house. Good, but nothing like morels.
Anyone have any tips about where to look for them?

I could tell you, then I'd have to kill you......

My best places have been a red cedar grove with a pretty open floor, a dense thicket of arm sized saplings, and often, around recently cut down elms. Of course I have also found them in grassy roadsides and in leaf litter under mature forest.

Here in Ohio they are mostly found on hilltops in mature forest early, and under fruit and dead elm trees late in the season. This year though was a fantastic one for morels and they grew pretty much everywhere. My brother and I came up with over 400. Found some more yesterday but they were dry since the season here is pretty much over.
