Independence?

I recently read in Uncle John's Bathroom Reader that only one US state has never been under a foreign flag - Idaho. I find this interesting - if true.

I always thought it was part of the Louisiana Purchase, but apparently I'm wrong.

However, this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_Territory
says that the Oregon Territory was claimed by BOTH the U.S. and Great Britain.

I consider that as flying under another flag, just as Montana "flew" under France.
Caves are rare and precious things. Cavers...even more so. Treat each accordingly.

And I was taught in school that the only U.S. state that was its own country before it became a state, was Texas.

They STILL call it the "Republic of Texas"...

I thought the foreign flag it was under was that of the US. Ask any native Idahoan.

However, California had an Empire within it (that of Emperor Norton) and Missouri had the Kingdom of Callaway. (Callaway County seceded from both the Union and the Confederacy during Civil War. I'm not sure anyone noticed it was gone.)

Vermont was also a Republic:

I've seen this other places than Wiki, too.

Utah was a breakaway territory for awhile too.

I'm still wondering about Uncle John's Bathroom Reader, mentioned at the beginning of this discussion. Maybe I lead a sheltered life. I've never head of it.

Thanks Wendy. I wonder how many, if any, skip the reading material and just carry the wireless laptop into the john? I guess it's more of a guy thing.

Taking a book into the John probably stems from a time when it used to have a dual purpose.

I've also seen toilet paper with reading material printed on it, so there you go.

Wayne, next time you take your laptop into the John, have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncle_John ... oom_Reader
