Anyone familar with Costa Rica?

Postby Wayne Harrison » Sep 14, 2006 7:57 pm

We're considering going to Costa Rica on vacation next year and are beginning to look at tours, packages, etc. I'd love to hear from anyone on the forum who is familiar with it that can give me some pointers on what to look for and what to avoid.

Wayne,

There is a really nice summary of part of the NSS Costa Rica Project that was published back in the 90s. I'm not sure which issue it was, but I can find out at home. There are some fantastic maps to go with the caves. Also, I'm not positive, but the project may still be continuing. On the NSS Projects/Expeditions page I found the following:

"Costa Rica Project

Annual expeditions are made to Costa Rico for a dual purpose: to explore, map, and scientifically study the caves and karst of that country; and to establish contact with Costa Rican cavers and help them develop speleological skills. Several more expeditions are planned for the future. Project directors: Norma Peacock and Bruce Bannerman, PO Box 257, Culloden, WV 25510."

Maybe there something you can do to help out while you're down there.

Have Fun!

There are some nice caves... I was on that project for year as the project photographer and survey grunt. I *THINK* it was around cieudad Neily but am not sure at all. That NSS News issue would be the way to go.

Just checked and the special issue of JCKS was Volume 55, June/December 1992 Number 1/2

There are some great descriptions and some absolutely fantastic maps. Hope McAdams (Uhl back then) did a fantastic job with the cartography. The full scale maps look even more brilliant.
