I have lights designed for for caving. They are LEDs with 8 hours full light and 16 hours reserve. They fit on helmet or forehead but they are not cheap. However they are not the toys you find on the market today. I sell these to firefighters and Industrial plants. They are waterproof to 20' (yes I have special scuba ones also) and there are 2 different models at my site.
The best one has 4 Luxeon Star leds these are extremely bright and will give focused distance and peripheral vision of 200' x 60'

So by that rationale, does caving with the more common "toys" on the market today make us lesser cavers?

That headlamp in your picture looks a lot like the Foxfury Pro Outdoor. There's a discussion thread on Foxfury lights here.

I trust this model has a manual adjustment for light output? I seem to recall the early Foxfurys were NOT manually adjustable, and even worse the damn lamp adjusted itself based on ambient light levels! Not very useful for caving. I assume they corrected that oversight with their later models. [Edit - they did, and this model IS manually adjustable according to the specs I just found on the web. Any cavers out there use this model?]

I have not used one, however they do get my vote for the most UGLY headlamp I've ever seen. Of course, some are not into fashionable caving attire, and don't care..
I did look at getting the original model with the nichia-style old school LEDs when they fist came out. But then came the Sten, and well, you know..

I do wonder about the durability of plastic headtorches for caving use.

For the lights I build, I stuck with old mining headlamp cases for the business end, since they are mechanically very strong, and the glass lens is easy to replace, as well as pretty scratch-resistant - there's no problem leaning against a sharp wall while hands are occupied with weight on the headpiece, or scraping mud off with gritty gloved hands.
They aren't always waterproof, but since the electronics inside them is, it doesn't much matter.

However, for a complete ground-up design, I do see the appeal of something like a Stenlight - much lighter, and pretty robust to boot, and even if a lens got scratched, presumably it's easy to replace, since the light was built with the expectation of being abused underground?

Sorry there has been development in the market far beyond LEDS, it is a excited matrix solution thus a Plasma (sorry I wish I had more). I saw one at a computer convention, god they have LED printers
