For Sale: Caves of California

Postby Larry E. Matthews » Sep 24, 2005 7:53 am

The original 1962 Edition in like-new condition. Autographed, to me, by William R. Halliday, who now lives here in Nashville, TN.

194 pages long. You just can't find one in better condition than this. This is by far the rarest State Survey there is.

$600, plus shipping and insurance.

Just out of curiosity Larry, how did you come up with that figure (I have no idea what the value would be myself, just asking...)?

This was based on both offers to buy or sell this item or similar items that I have seen over the past year, especially on sites like eBay.

500 copies of this book were printed 43 years ago. 175 copies were lost in a "flood". That left 325 to sell. How many do you think survive today, especially in pristine condition, like this copy?

You could ask Emily Davis about the value of this book. She is actually considered qualified by the IRS on estimating values of cave books.

Caves of California sells for several hundred dollars. I'm just not sure how many several hundred.

I would be interested to know what the old "Caves of Indiana" book goes for in good condition these days. I have a near-mint copy of it, still with the fold-out map in the back cover too. Not that I'd ever sell it though...

I've seen them go for around $50-$60 in the recent past.

Mike, You can have mine if I die before you. :) Just let Jaime know I said you can have it.
