Basement treasure trove of old caving books

Postby Phil Winkler » Sep 4, 2014 6:28 pm

I had some young-uns bring the contents of my basement up to the garage and have been slowly sifting the contents. Imagine my surprise to find a box labels caving books. I haven't seen these in over 20 years, I think. Here is the list. All are in new or good condition.

The Descent of the Pierre St. Martin by Norbert Casteret
Celebrated American Caves by Charles Mohr and Howard Sloane
The Underground Atlas by John Middleton and Tony Waltham
Glacieres or Freezing Caverns by Balch
Ich war in der Unterwelt by Gerhard Schmitt (In German, but the cover is descending 4 Wells in Jackson C. AL. and many pictures of US caves)
Caves by Tony Waltham
The Jewel Cave Adventure by Herb and Jan Conn
Lechuguilla, Jewel of the Underground (many authors)
Underground Worlds (2 copies) a Time-Life book.
The Bat by Nina Leen
Cave Diving Manual by the NSS Cave Diving Section edited by Sheck Exley and India F. Young, 1982
Karst Landforms by Marjorie M. Sweeting

Please make an offer for all of them starting at $100 with bids in $10 increments. Auction will last until September 17th.

Lol (all of them). Phil, I would suggest that you try to sell them individually like Larry E. Matthews has been doing. You will probably make a greater profit selling them individually. Also, people who have an interest in only one or a few of your books won't have to pay $100+ when they are just interested in say one of them and don't have much of an interest in the others. But the down side is that to sell them individually is time consuming.

Of course. I'm hoping that there is someone who wants them all. I've become a tad lazy, unlike Larry. :)
I reread the Descent of PSM this evening and was struck by how closely our 1976 expedition to the PSM mimicked the ones in the early 50's with our A, B and C teams, etc. I suspect I had read this book already.

Oh, I'll pay shipping too.

I have the Lechuguilla, and Pierre St. Martin books, and they are very good. I get out the Lech book when I want to show non-cavers what caving is all about :big grin: . Or when I want to make myself sick with jealousy. The photos are incredible.

 These books are worth every penny and I'd take them myself but already own most of them. Celebrated American Caves is one of my personal favorites and I still cherish that book because of where it took me as a 10 year old. I've since been in a few of the caves mentioned in there.
