Need an idea on how to spend your tax stimulus check?

How about saving 68 caves and springs in central West Virginia?

Eight Rivers Safe Development, Inc. is a non-profit , tax-exempt WV corporation dedicated to promote awareness and education of karst and to advocate safe development practices on karst terrains.

We are opposed to the construction of a 1.5 million gallon per day sewage treatment plant in a narrow karst valley with over 68 karst features - caves, springs and insurgences. These springs feed a world class reproducing trout stream - West Virginia's famous Elk River.

The site selected is a shallow karst floodplain which contains several known voids (caves!), springs and underground streams.

The proposed pipeline routing follows a narrow 5-mile long valley that contains 68 known karst features - any of which could sustain irrerversible harm due to pipeline construction or a leak of the collection system (piping, manholes, pumping stations).

We have filed a mandamus action against the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection for failing to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for the project as required by West Virginia state law. Our trial is in June 2008 and we aggressively preparing our case and conducting field studies to define the geology and hydrology of the project area.

Our legal and technical costs will increase significantly as the trial date approaches.

Bump.

It's tax refund time and almost tax stimulus time.

Do something good with your tax stimulus check - instead of using it to stimulate the economy, use it to stimulate some cave and watershed protection instead! Consider it your anti-stimulus check - your small part to stop uninformed development and poorly planned economic development.

Please consider making a contribution to Eight Rivers Safe Development - ironically, it's tax deductable!!
