Cave Gating Needs Assessment/Criteria

Postby Cavecon » Nov 16, 2005 4:28 pm

I am interested in any thesis, literature reviews, articles, or technical reports on policies and criteria concerning cave gating. Not so much interested in the different designs as I am in the step-by-step assessment and decision making process-- specifically as it applies to caves located on private property (though if anyone has a handle on a succinct distillation of federal guidelines that would be helpful as well). I am really interested in must reads and historic documents. Thanks in advance for your help. --Andrew–

Perhaps a good starting point for literature would be the National Cave and Karst Symposium Proceedings.

Also you may want to check The Office of Surface Mining for published information on bat gates.

I went to a BCI workshop in Penn. a number of years ago and the state wildlife agency there were very impressive. The gates, artificial habitats, state procurement of bat habitat (canoe creek state park for example has the old church that houses a maternity colony). They would be another resource to check with.

The comment about OSM may be helpful, but the state divisions of reclamation would have more information. I used to do some of the Virginia bat habitat evaluations for abandoned mines, which just looked at potential habitat conditions (and cost). Caves have many more aspects to be considered in an evaluation.

Bat Gate Design
Proceedings of Bat Gate Design: A Technical Interactive Forum was held at the Red Lion Hotel, Austin, Texas, March 4-6, 2002.

available in the NSS Bookstore

I don't know if it has the info you're looking for, but thought I'd mention it anyway.

The National Speleological Society Library also contains a wealth of information and would also be a good resource for your research.
