I am happy to announce that the Rockcastle Karst Conservancy is the new owner of the Great Saltpetre Cave Preserve in Rockcastle County, Kentucky! The property was transferred from the Felburn Foundation to the Rockcastle Karst Conservancy today, August 20, 2006. This is RKC's first cave preserve! Approximately 30 people were in attendance for the deed transfer ceremony.
The Great Saltpetre Cave Preserve is a 305 acre tract of land containing the Great Saltpetre Cave. The cave was used extensively during the War Of 1812 for the production of potassium nitrate. The Great Saltpetre Cave Preserve was the site of the campground for the 2001 NSS Convention. The annual Karst-O-Rama caving event is held at the Preserve.
The Preserve will continue to be managed by the Greater Cincinnati Grotto, The Dayton Underground Grotto and the Blue Grass Grotto.
I would like to thank Ellie Schiller of the Felburn Foundation and all RKC members especially those that worked hard to make this happen! It has been a 33 month effort.
