ACCA volunteers needed for Saltpeter Pit cleanup

Postby Ernie Coffman » Jul 5, 2006 6:07 pm

Received a brochure, advertising a SaltPeter Pit Cleanup, Pulaski County, Kenturcky, on July 12 - 26, which makes it difficult for folks that are traveling to the NSS Convention, in Washington. But, if you're not going to Washington, and your in the Kentucky area, this might be a real cool turn-on for assisting the cleanup committee, as they need folks that can do an 80 foot rap, with 40 feet of garbage in there. Needless to say, there's a going passage, as this is the habitat for the world's 3rd largest known colony of Rafinesque's big-eared bats. Non-vertical volunteers are needed big-time, as well. ACCA and BCI will be working at the project for two-weeks, so...contact the ACCA Office if you can help out on this project. Phone 270.786.1466 or email them at pnims@cavern.org. This might be the time to join their organization, as well, for most members are in both organizations and contribute to protecting caves and the wildlife found therein.

There will be a Fall restoration project going on, as well, on November 11th, where they'll be cleaning up a 40-foot deep cave pit with 20-feet of garbage. Again, contact the ACCA office for more details and directions to the work site, which is out of Glasgow, Kentucky on Route 68/80.

Wish I could help, but this is the best I can do.
