How long ago was this cave discovered? The name "Fifty Six" is familiar and I think the name of the cave might have been Alexander, but I only have vague memories to go on. After the Springfield Convention in '68 a few of us headed south before driving back to the Washington, DC area. Bill Biggers and I were in a red VW bug, Dick Bishop and Dave Newson were in a station wagon that got stuck in a creek as I recall. Cavers who lived in the area showed us around. Was Alexander Cave even discovered by then?

Very nice! This was my first wild cave ever, back in 1997. I remember the discussion on whether we would need to find someone with a key or if the gate would already be removed, the boot sucking mud, washing up in the stream, and of course the formations.
