SKTF Winter 2011-2012
The new watershed clean up season is upon us and the SKTF has a busy winter planned :kewl: . The Wet Cave watershed begins on top of the Cumberland Plateau at the head of Roark’s Cove. The cove is located just north of the Domain of the University of the South and has been the site of historic dumping. When leaving the Domain on Roark’s Cove Road is the junction with the aptly named Junk Lane . This area has had significant dumping of trash for a long enough time that the road was named for the junk piled up along the cove.

As we have seen from past clean-up efforts in other watersheds, the debris that is dumped in the upper part of a watershed eventually makes it down into the caves lower in the watershed. In addition to the typical debris, there are usually hazardous substances such as batteries; paint and oils which will also enter the caves affecting the cave environment. This is true of the Wet Cave watershed.

The SKTF has planned to begin the clean-up of this watershed on January 14, 2011. Based on what we can see on the surface this clean-up will probably take multiple days to accomplish. For more information, contact Maureen Handler at tnshotgun@earthlink.net or 423-605-5569.

**ATTN CAVERS**

The SKTF will be holding it's first clean up of the year next Saturday, January 14th  . This will be a road side clean up in the upper Wet Cave Watershed in Franklin County Tennessee. This area is the site of historic dumping that is impacting Wet Cave. This area is just to the north of the University of the South in Sewanee, TN off of Roark's Cove Road at the intersection of Junk Lane. We will be meeting at 9:30 AM central time to begin the clean up of this sensitive watershed.

I will post directions with mileages early next week. Please come join us for this great project.

If you need more information, please contact me at tnshotgun@earthlink.net or 423-605-5569.

Waiting on Maureen. I'd recommend writting down her number and giving her a call if you don't see anything posted by Friday. Maureen Handler 423-605-5569.

I've never been to the site so unfortunately can't tell you exactly, but for now I have googled Roarks Cove Road and Junk Lane. This should give you a good estimate of where it will be.

The coordinates for the Wet Cave Watershed clean up are 35 13 41.72 and 85 55 27.99

To get to the clean up from Monteagle.

Exit I24 at Exit 134. Head north on Hwy 41A toward Sewanee. Go 4.5 miles on Hwy 41A and turn right onto University Avenue at the big University of the South sign. Go 1 mile and turn right onto Texas Avenue, then turn right again staying on Texas Avenue. Go 0.2 miles and turn right onto Roarks Cove Road. Go 1.8 miles down Roarks Cove Rd to the clean up site.

We will be setting up the haul system to clean up a cove below the road. The clean up will begin at 9:30 central time. There are some of us showing up at 8:30 central time to set up the haul system. If you want to come early and help with this, it will be appreciated. There is limited parking, so please carpool if you can. There is additional parking about a mile up the road where we can stage cars as needed.

Please call me at 423-605-5599 if you need addtional information.

Thanks Kelli... now it looks like I can't go... I've injured my eye and can't see to drive.

OUCH.... Hope it heals and you don't have any long term damage.

I'm sure like most cleanups, you will have another opportunity to help before Winter is over.

Thanks Kelly. I go back in a week to see how it's doing. I hope it will be alright. It sucks because I have been looking forward to this since the fall and here a couple of days before I get hurt. Oh well.
I'll be back for the next ones. I enjoy doing these cleanups a lot and encourage everyone to get on board.
