Baugh Cave Cleanup

Postby nathanroser » May 8, 2011 7:15 pm

If anyone's ever heard of Baugh Cave in New York I have some good news. This Saturday a few people from the Syracuse Outing Club, some local cavers, and myself got together to haul garbage out of Baugh Cave. It's not a very long cave but is nonetheless very cool. There's lots of chimneying down deep fissures, the rock deeper in is shiny black, the surface opening is pretty impressive for New York, and there's even a geode on one of the walls. A while ago some people thought this cave would make a convenient garbage dump. At one point the whole cave was buried under a giant pile of rubbage, but over the years the hard work of many volunteers has removed the trash. There's still bits and pieces left down there but this weekend we got almost all of what was remaining out, so now you're walking on mud and rocks instead stairs made of trash bags.

This project will hopefully be finished up next Saturday, the 18th. Any cavers who can make it are welcome. Ask if you need details. I believe this project has been going on for about 7 years. Hundreds of grain bags have been filled and removed, and it'll be nice to see this place all cleaned up.

Given the number of other pits in the area, the trash filled sinkhole in the middle of the field nearby would definitely be worth cleaning up both for the health of the water system and to see if there's a cave beneath it or a viable dig site.

I agree. It didn't even seem like there was a whole lot in that sink.
