Is this why?

Postby tncaver » Feb 3, 2011 6:31 pm

Read the following article link. It's about a man conducting a systematic program to search for novel drugs
produced by cave-dwelling microorganisms.

However, is this also why caves are being closed in bulk by our government? To "protect" biological biota
like this man discovered? If so, then once again the government is just plain overboard and off the mark,
as the cave this man visited has been accessed by cavers for decades yet still produced new biota. It should
also be noted that these new discoveries might not have been easily attainable if the cave mentioned
had been on state property. Hoops would have been required to jump through with no promise of access.
Hoops that might not have been given permission. And lets all be proud that a local caver helped make
this happen. Cudos to John Hickman and the SCCi for making this man's accomplishments attainable. :kewl:

“When I was an undergraduate at Virginia Tech, I joined the VPI CaveClub and went caving almost every weekend,” he said. “I guess you could say it was an obsession.”
