School moves to avoid bats

MANSFIELD, Ark., Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Administrators at a Mansfield, Ark., school have moved classrooms to a different building to avoid the school's bat infestation.

Mansfield Elementary Principal Kathy Goff said a teacher had found a dead bat in a utility closet before school started but administrators thought it was an isolated incident, KHBS-TV, Fort Smith, Ark., reported Friday.

Mansfield Schools Superintendent Jim Hattabaugh said teachers thought the dead bat was the cause of an unpleasant odor but the smell persisted after the carcass was removed.

"We started looking around and noticed the odor was something else, and we kind of blamed that on the little boys missing the toilet," Hattabaugh said.

However, Goff said the true cause of the smell was soon discovered.

"We found guano on the roof. That's when we knew there was a major problem," Goff said.

Hattabaugh said students would be able to return to the building once it had been cleared of bats and inspected. He said a new roof has been ordered for the school that would keep the animals from re-entering.
