Bats are hard to handle

A NORTH Queensland town being driven batty by thousands of flying foxes should be able to scare them away using methods such as revving chainsaws, the state opposition says.

Charters Towers residents have long complained about the foul smelling creatures, which have invaded the town in numbers of as many as 50,000.

Local Nationals MP Shane Knuth said under current Queensland laws the bats were not allowed to be disturbed if they were pregnant or carrying young.
