NCKRI Seeks Director

New Mexico Tech University is seeking a Director for the National Cave & Karst Research Institute in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
National Park Service National Cave Specialist Ronal Kerbo reports that the current director, Dr. Louise Hose, has accepted new responsibilities with the Park Service. The Director's position is still open and applications are being accepted by the university.

TITLE: DIRECTOR DEPT R&ED/CAVE & KARST

JOB DUTIES:
The Director will serve as manager and chief executive officer of the Cave & Karst Research Institute. The Director will create an agenda encompassing research, education, and information management initiatives based on a strategic vision developed in coordination with the Board of Directors. The Director will comply with and advance the purposes of the National Cave and Karst Research Institute (NCKRI) Act of 1998 and will build the institute to further the science of speleology; centralize and standardize speleological information; foster interdisciplinary cooperation in cave and karst research programs; promote public education; promote national and international cooperation in protecting the environment for the benefit of cave and karst landforms, and promote and develop environmentally sound and sustainable resource management practices.
As the primary interface of NCKRI with the public, the chosen candidate will be responsible for promoting, identifying and nurturing relationships within the C&K community, representing the Institute in public venues, and for fundraising activities. Together with the Board of Directors, the Director will develop a staffing plan that integrates the available professional expertise and resources of the organization. Responsible for supervising the NCKRI staff located in Carlsbad, the Director will also work directly with the staff of NMT. Other duties include responsibility for the daily management of the Institute including fiscal accountability and ensuring the sustainability of the organization, and satisfying the strategic initiatives of the Board of Directors. The Director will actively communicate NCKRI activities to the Board and other interested parties.
Recruiting for this position is one of the first tasks under a Cooperative Agreement between the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMT) and the National Park Service (NPS). The agreement, renewable after the initial five-year term, establishes NMT as the primary academic partner with NPS as the administrator of the Institute.
QUALIFICATIONS:
(1) Earned Doctorate coupled with (3 years) experience managing substantial scientific or technical projects OR (2) Masters level education coupled with significant (>4 years) experience managing substantial scientific or technical projects. Transcripts are required.
(2) Skill in developing and maintaining cooperative partnerships with a diverse group of scientists, organizations, and government agencies;
(3) Successful track record in obtaining funds and experience in fundraising;
(4) Ability to plan and manage complex research programs and to effectively use funding and personnel resources to accomplish goals;
(5) Ability to communicate and negotiate in a diplomatic and professional manner with scientists, private organizations, government agencies, and the media;
(6) Experience with the domestic cave & karst community and the international cave & karst community strongly desired;
EMPLOYEE BENEFITS: Many benefits are available to NM Tech personnel. You may choose to participate in the health, dental, and life insurance plans, the cost of which is shared by NM Tech and the employee. You also have the option of participating in a salary reduction plan, whereby you can reduce your taxable income by the amount of a specified amount of un-reimbursed medical expenses and by a specified amount of dependent care. In addition to your social security contribution, you will be contributing a tax-deferred 7.675% of your gross earnings to the New Mexico Educational Retirement Board or to other available retirement plans. NM Tech also contributes to the retirement fund. Annual and sick leave are accrued at the approximate rate of 7 hours per pay period (approx 26 pay periods in one year). You may also choose to take advantage of our tuition waiver program, participate in the credit union, and enjoy the many recreational facilities at Tech.
