Mammoth Cave Research

Hello Hello.

Next semester I am doing a research project with a professor in the mammoth cave area. More specifically, we are studying the Smith's Grove Quad. We are going to measure joint sets in the Big Clifty through the St. Louis Formations. We are then going to measure the long axes of dolines in the area and see if the joint sets propogate through the area and contribute to the formation of dolines and caves.

Since I am not familiar with the area, or Kentucky's GIS/Map database, I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of Geologic and Topo maps online? Also, any information about doline occurrences and causes, joint set patterns and caves would be uber-helpful.

Have you tried contacting CRF? We have assembled a pretty through base data set for the Mammoth Cave area. Data layers include:

Topographic
Aerial
DEM
DLG
geology

Contacting the CRF was my next step after my pre-initial research. As a matter of fact, I had taken a trip with my Geomorphology class, and Chris Groves was our trip leader. I'll try to contact him directly.
