Strange shields from China

Postby Dave Bunnell » Apr 12, 2006 11:42 pm

I'm always intrigued by unusual formations, and on a trip to China last fall I saw a number of them that seem hard to explain. So I'm thinking I will post some on this forum to get people's thoughts.

Below is a pair of very strange shields from a cave in Guangxi province. As I understand it, shields from from water squeezed out of cracks under capillary pressure, and as such are generally attached to walls or ceilings. But each member of this pair are completely free standing. So are these shields, and if so, how could they have formed?
