This was a really nice article on one of the "painted caves" from wayyyy back when. The picture is fantastic!

Coolio! I always liked this painting, but I had no idea they thought the coat colors were fake. I thought spotted coats were a secondary characteristic to domestication.

Jane and I had the opportunity to visit Pech Merle back in 1972. It is a gorgeous cave, filled with paintings, footprints, children's finger marks in the mud, and more shields than I've ever seen anywhere else in the world. The cave is still open to the public. If you're ever in the area (south central France near the small City of Cahors), do make it a point to visit.
