Pre-Convention Trip to Copper Canyon

Postby Phil Winkler » Feb 27, 2009 4:40 pm

Here is a recent email from Doug Rhodes, former Editor of the NSS News and the trip coordinator for the 1986 Copper Canyon trip for the New Mexico NSS Convention. The train ride is known as one of the top ten train rides in the world! Tunnels, bridges, switchbacks, etc., etc. The train is known as El Chepe. Doug has a tourist ranch near the canyon that is out of the way to say the least.

We've made a few changes from last year, mainly spending time at my place instead of Divisadero and also boarding the train here in Bahuichivo and doing a van trip here then returning by train and staying in Creel. Costs have gone up greatly on the train and we did that to save money. Also, to eliminate boring parts of the trip where there is not much to see.

Do hope you can make it along with, perhaps a few of the other people who were with us in '86, those who are still alive. We seem to have lost a lot of the participants from that trip.
