TAG Fire

Postby roger_haley » Sep 25, 2007 10:09 am

Looks less and less likely there will be a fire at TAG?

Here in Huntsville it as DRY as I have ever seen it.

It would take a lot of rain to make the situation better.
Oh well I go to TAG to see my friends which is as warm as any fire can be. :kewl:

Looking forward to seeing you all there!

That would be a shame. A real shame. But, no fire is better than a possibly horrific alternative.

Hey, Roger, is Dry Creek Cave still open and accessible? If so, long, very dry periods are an excellent time to visit and see if the long syphon is now opened and passable without diving gear.

I'm hoping to find passage to the suspected underground lake that feeds Skidmore's resurgence...

Don't know about Dry Creek
Angela Morgan would be the best source of current info there.

Mike, we tried that once many years ago. Water was flowing heavily over Lynn Dam and disappearing directly into the ground at the foot of a bluff about 1/4 mile downstream. We dropped a pound or two of green flourescein dye in and got positive results 24 hrs later at Skidmore. However, once the water subsided we had a big dig to do at the foot of the cliff where the water went in. There must have been 20 feet of mud and rock and very unstable. We even considered rigging some cratering charges with nitrate and diesel. JV's dad, Van, swore he knew how to do it.

Varnedo once did a calculation showing how much volum of cave had to lie between the two entrances. But that volume could be not very high, but real, real wide like a bedding plane. However, considering other caves in the Sinks area, I would bet there is a lot of cave to be found there. We dove with gear and probeb all over the back of Skidmore and never could find where the water came in quickly. It just sort of oozes into the cave and out the entrance to spread all over Happy Valley.

Hmm..I hope I have my facts right since I haven't thought of this area in a very long time. Seems during convention we drove by and saw a private residence around the dam area now with no more access for the public. Sigh..

hey guys, about the bonfire this is what the Darien Dopp had to say about it on DCGNet:

This is the case every year that I have been involved in helping to put on the event. The decision whether to light the fire is always decided during the Cave-In. This year is different only in the fact that we are in the midst of a drought. The property has been getting some rain, but there is no definite answer to the question you posed. If it isn't too dry, and we get approval from the authorities, the fire will go off as planned, but there is always the possibility (every year) we may not be able to light it. We keep our fingers crossed and hope for rain leading up to, but not during, the event. A little rain dancing wouldn't hurt for this next week, but don't get overzealous or it will rain while we are there trying to enjoy it. :-)

I'm really hoping for a bonfire as this will be my wife's first time at a Cave-In and I'd like her to be so impressed she wants to come back every year!

We got hammered with rain in Lafayette yesterday, but that don't mean it rained up on the mountain.

what if everyone brings 1 gallon of water and the day of the fire, a couple of hours before, we all dump out water in the field around the fire, covering the whole field? that's 1200 gallons of water

I'm pretty sure they got a good rain up there Thursday. I was watching it on the radar all day because we need it so bad here in Georgia. Of course the rain went away before it got here, but it looked like Chattanooga and Lafayette got a good drenching.

The whole state is now under an outdoor water ban now if I heard them right.
