The bad storm at Convention

Postby George Dasher » Jul 30, 2007 2:32 pm

Has anyone else noticed that their trip reports often end with the phrase: "Thank God no one was seriously hurt"?

It seems to be a redundant theme in mine....

That is because most of the people had been bused to the photo salon. I hadn't eaten all day, so I was making dinner for Vik and Ellie before we went. Jep.

Kind of them to evacuate before the storm hit.

Indiana Weather

Postby HoosierNick » Jul 30, 2007 9:35 pm

Carita and I were at Chug Station when it hit. The sky was that funny green color you see when a twister is imminent. There was no rotation, but there was some mothball-sized hail and 60 MPH straight line winds. The only thing left after it rolled through the Station were the log picnic tables. Everything else was in the hay field or in the fence. We should have everything repaired in time for OTR, though.

The 2007 Photo Salon Storm

Postby dlocklear01 » Aug 9, 2007 12:33 am

I was just curious which tents and tarp designs survived the storm
better.

I had 2 Kelty Noah's Tarps pitched together on a thin aluminum pole.
The pole snapped, but the tarps are o.k. I was able to salvage the
alumimum pole, but it is now about 24 inches shorter than it was before.

The odd thing about that is, that before leaving for the convention, I
went to several stores looking for a pole that was 24 inches shorter
than mine. I never thought about cutting the shock-cord and leaving
one section behind. ( I was trying to save weight of the baggage
on the plane )

The Noah's Tarp is a parabolic tarp. I would have liked to seen
it in the wind to see how I could have set it up better. All the
tie points and stakes were still in the ground. I wonder if I had
had a strong steel pole if the tarps would have held or ripped?

What happened to the guys that had the ginormous tarp rigged to
a tall wooden log?

What is the estimated total financial damage of the camp? I bet
it is $ 10,000. My damage was $ 34. But nearly everybody lost
something, right?

I packed heavy-duty rain-gear when I left Houston for the convention, but
never had to use it on the 11 day trip to Indiana.

Maybe we can get EZ-UP tents to give us a special discount on our
next purchase.
