I have caved in far better locations. I just felt the Convention committee could stop the " lets have a convention in every state in the union" mentality. Do we have one in Louisiana, Delaware, or how about Kansas. I again say yuck! Florida sucks.

One of the BIG issues is that *somebody* has to volunteer to host the convention. Omigod, it's a lot of work. If conventions were only held in the caviest parts of the country, it would cause serious burnout of the local cavers and they'd quit hosting conventions, and there wouldn't be any for some years.

I agree, there's a lot more to conventions (in fact for me almost *everything* about conventions) that doesn't include the local caving scene.

Scott - I think your reply is a bit misleading. The BOG doesn't really select the locations. They only vote on bids received from a group who volunteers to host a convention. If no bids are received there is no vote.

Squirrel Girl makes some good points.

I've been to converntions in "cavey" area and in "non-cavey" areas and have enjoyed all of them. II go to convention for the convention. If I get to go caving it is a bonus.

You're right, Martha. Thanks for pointing that out. I should have said that the BOG selects from the submitted locations.

while I cant claim to have done hardly any work on the 07' convention beyond leading about 8 trips and hanging out in the cave info area a few days, I was on the planning committe email list and can assure you that many many people spent hundreds of hours apeice and virtually every minute of convention just doing the grunt work so the rest of us could enjoy it. spreading the work is definately needed. besides, a convention in a "cave poor" state just means you need to pack your shovel too :P
I'm not scared of the dark, it's the things IN the dark that make me nervous. :)

I don't go to conventions primarily to go caving (though I try to do some if the convention is in a cave-rich area). In fact, I've gone to conventions without taking any caving gear at all (Maine and Michigan, for example). There are plenty of other events I can attend to go caving.

I go to convention to attend sessions, programs, and see good friends I don't get to see very often. Don't base your convention attendance on whether there are good caves or not. Go to convention for the other benefits. Besides, I would never have visited states such as Idaho and Maine if it weren't for the convention being there!

I lived in Florida for five years and there are some very nice, highly decorated dry caves in the Marianna area.

I think it a great thing that the Convention is in Florida and a lot of cave divers will be able to interact with more dry cavers and vice versa.I also appreciate the hospitality being offered and enjoy the potential to see caves that would be different and unique to the area not to mention the workshops and meeting fellow cavers.

How many dry cavers have seen the springs or cave divers in action etc?
How many spring divers have had exposure to dry caving techniques ,workshops etc?

I expect a lot of great things to come from this convention.I only hope I can make it there, even for pulled pork only ;)

2008 NSS Convention, Lake City, Florida
By: Wm Shrewsbury (St. Petersburg, Florida)

Hello Everyone,

As many of you know, the 2008 NSS Convention will be held in Lake City
Florida, August 11-15. This is the first time an NSS Convention has
ever been held in Florida, and we promise you a Convention like no
other before.

Many think of Florida as a cave diving state. While it is true that we
have an incredible amount of limestone under water, we have many caves
above ground too. Check out our website at
www.nss2008.com/EventsAndTrips.html for details on trips before, during
and after Convention. TAG's own Alan Cressler and Matt Kalch will host a
camp in Northern Florida (details to be posted soon), and the TBAG
grotto will show that even as far south as Orlando there is plenty of
caving to go around.

This Convention will be unique in that it will feature an enhanced view
of the relationship between our underground spring sources and the
environment. The Cave Diving Section (CDS) will host a mini-workshop on
Sunday before Convention on the same campus. Their focus, while
primarily on cave-diving, will be talks about this relationship.

There will be special session by Art Palmer and Lee Florea on the
Geology and Origin of Florida Caves. We've all see photos of the vast
underwater systems here, and they have the same stalagmites &
stalactites we see above the water table. Art & Lee will fill us in how
this happened, and where the future of other karst beds may be.

The JSS kids will get to take a trip to the seashore and explore grass
beds while examining sea life. They are also spending some time
underground, as well as swimming in some of the area's many crystal
clear, cool springs. In fact, they're going to have such a great time I
tried to sign up myself! (I think my gray beard gave me away...)

There are now several clips on our website about caving in Florida -
http://www.nss2008.com/PicsandVideos.html. One of them shows how little
caving gear is needed to block out the sun, another some of the beautiful
formations to be found in a state literally dripping with limestone.

The pre-registration deadline is fast approaching - this coming Monday, June
2nd, is the last day to take advantage of the pre-registration discount. Go
to http://www.nss2008.com/Registration.html to download the registration
form in PDF and mail it by 6/3, or even better, register online with our
Secure Server at https://nss2008.com/register.

For those worried about driving the length of Florida (and current gas
prices!) we are only 45 minutes from the Georgia border! If you've ever
visited Glory Hole in South Georgia, you have been practically in our
backyard. Instead of turning off I-75, just continue on South for about
the same distance and you're in Lake City. We are just south of the I-75/I-
10 crossing.

There are many, many other things too numerous to mention here. It's
better to come and experience the "1st NSS Convention in Florida"
for yourself.

We hope to see you at the 2008 NSS Convention!
