Thanks, Scott for the pix (and the others, too). Bummer that I missed it. So what was the 66 chain saw garden????
:?:

And, I was a little taken aback by the cartoon of the nekkid girlie with the "SG" for a face. Considering my nickname initials. But it turned out to be a "Shallow Grotto."

Bubble Cave LLC was camped behind Martha and Tri-State. Here's what our canopies ended up looking like.

But first the story. It began to rain so we rushed around getting all our tent windows zipped up. Then someone said that we better get the windows up on our cars. We then got all the gear under the canopies into the middle of them. We had three people from our camp and were joined by three gentlemen from Alabama. Deciding we had beaten the wrath of Sister Winkie, we broke out the wine and began a wine party to celebrate. WRONG. Shouldn't mess with Sister Winkie.

We had two 30' canopies end to end. While I was getting some wine glasses from the kitchen area under the first canopy, the winds picked up. I grabbed the canopy, but was lifted at least 5 feet in the air. I weigh 235 lbs, so no little feat. I let go and rushed over to the other canopy and along with Vik, Ellie and the three Alabama guys, managed to hold it down. Josh of BATS came by and helped us lower the other canopy while we were having driving rain and hail hitting us.

There were three extremely close lightning strikes before the mayhem started and the winds shifted approximately 270 degrees from beginning to end. Also heard that the winds got up to 55 MPH.

I know you all think this might be crazy, but this was one of the best natural rushes I've ever had, including many a caving trip.

After-wards, we were able to replace the couple of bent poles in the Front Royal Grotto canopy and we were able to resurrect it. Guess I should report that the Front Royal canopy is in better shape than when I picked it up from Janet. Vik donated many poles to replace bent ones, figuring one good canopy was better than no canopies.

Needless to say, we all got drenched and missed the photo salon.

Here is some of the other canopies being cleaned up.

I want to thank all the Public Safety response units that came to our assistance and the American Red Cross. You guys are the best!!

BTW, this convention was the best I have attended since I began coming in 1995.

We passed the Chain Saw Garden on the way to a caving trip- I thought it was funny and got Scott to pull over and take pics for me. People do the strangest things. There was a house next to it, but if the person that lived there created it, they never came out and spoke while we were there.

Sister Winkie should be beat to death with a wet noodle.

She is not doing her job of keeping the bad weather at bay.

I knew this pagan worship was getting us nowhere. I'm glad somebody finally burned the witch!

My wife and I have been to the last ten conventions and agree that this one was the best. Future conventions should study this one to see how to set up the campground, showers, food, beer, signs, cave kiosk, etc.

Thank you Indiana Cavers!

That's right Andy. The signage was excellent. An often over looked detail that can make big difference.

They *always* burn her down. But Winkie is Phoenix...she does not live in the statue, but in the air and fire and moonshine. She hides in the trees on the edges of the corn and soybean desert between one statue and the next.

Even if there were no statue, Winkie would be there.

Whatever.

I still say Winkie sucks. She's never added anything to my convention experience. Most of the time she looks like a big pile of garbage.

Proudly anti-Winkie since 2004.

And it would seem the larger her effigy, the worse the weather. Maybe there is some correlation between this hocus-pocus and reality after all...

I'm with you, Andy! :exactly:

what if we had convention in a mall parking lot? :tonguecheek:
Maybe she woudl hide between the Ford Tacoma and the Honda Civic. Or inside, just behind the Sbarro or in the gap between the Gap and the Baby Gap.

My own little addition to the YouTube coverage of the 2007 Convention experience. As near as I can tell, I found three other Convention videos, but all three seem to be from Pittsburgh Grotto. You have to give them credit, they are prolific if nothing else. All were cool, in their own little way. If you guys get some time, check them out. Mine, too, while you're at it.

Hey CaverScott. We have the same exact group shot. Methinks you and your wife was at the same campsite I was.
Is this really necessary? Really? Ok......
